Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
