Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
